Rolex week of the straits - Day 2: WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN A WINDLESS DAY

15/09/2005

Porto Cervo - SARDINIA - ITA

The 27th edition of the Rolex Settimana delle Bocche, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, ended with a grey, rainy and windless day. After three days of adrenaline-rush sailing conditions, the three competing fleets - Farr 40, Swan 45 and IMS - were unable to sail their last race of the series due to the lack of wind.

The Race Committee was in fact able to start Race Nine for all classes, however - with the Farr 40s still floating in no air and struggling to round the top mark - the 40-minute time limit for the first windward leg expired for both the Swan 45 and the IMS divisions. At 1:50 pm, with rain drenching the crews and a fickle breeze shifting all over the course, the Race Committee decided to abandon racing for all the divisions, including the Farr 40 fleet that was still sailing around the course. The cut-off time for the final day was in fact set for 2pm. Therefore, last night's results determined the final winners of the 2005 Rolex Settimana delle Bocche: Italian America's Cup syndicate head Vincenzo Onorato won with his Mascalzone Latino in the Farr 40 fleet (17 entries), Marco Salvi's Vertigo from Italy dominated in the Swan 45 Class (10 entries) and Russian entry Synergy came first in the IMS division (6 entries).

British professional sailor Adrian Stead, tactician on Mascalzone Latino, would have definitely liked to complete the series with a final race, nevertheless he thought today was a good ending for the season: “We had a really great week with Mascalzone Latino's team. Today the weather wasn't quite on our side, but we did try to have one race. When racing was called off we were in second or third place, so we still had no problems with the overall scorings. Then the wind went and the rain came and that was the end of the regatta. We sailed very well all week, the whole team did a fantastic job and Vincenzo steered the boat really well. We are really pleased, really happy and this is a great end to a fantastic season.”

Rolex week of the straits - Day 2: ONE RACE TO GO AND GAMES ARE STILL OPEN

16/09/2005

Porto Cervo - SARDINIA - ITA

The 33 crews competing in the 27th edition of the Rolex Settimana delle Bocche, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, enjoyed another action-packed day of sailing. Today's races - two windward/leeward races for the Farr 40 and Swan 45 One Design classes, and a 23-mile coastal course for the IMS fleet - featured a strong and gusty Westerly-Northwesterly wind ranging between 22 and 28 knots, some spectacular wipe-outs under spinnaker, thrilling mark roundings, fearless gybes and a few OCSs (premature starts) and penalty turns.

With only one race to go, the final results are still open in all classes: Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino from Italy heads the Farr 40 fleet (17 entries) by 12 points, Italian Marco Salvi's Vertigo leads the Swan 45 Class (10 entries) by a narrow 1-point margin, and Russian entry Synergy has a 2-point lead in the IMS division (6 entries).

Among the Farr 40 fleet, Nanoq - owned by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, who is not currently sailing in Porto Cervo - dominated the first race of the day with a perfect start, showing off some excellent boat handling and speed. Jens Christensen, tactician on the Danish Farr 40, felt that today Nanoq was finally competitive: “for the first time we won a race and we are very happy with the boat. Since we got the boat for the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds in Sydney, we have been struggling quite a lot, striving to improve all the time. Finally, today we made some changes to the boat and for the first time we found some good speed. Today we got a good start and played well the wind shifts, but the main thing is that we were very fast and that always makes a huge difference. We are having a great series, I've been coming here for 20 years and Porto Cervo is always beautiful, no question about that”. Mascalzone Latino finished almost head-to-head with Nanoq, followed by Italian entry Valemezza of Valentina Mezzaroma. America's Cup syndicate head Vincenzo Onorato, is having a great time here in Sardinia and is very clear about his objectives: “This is one of the most beautiful racing courses in the whole world, and once again Sardinia has stood up to its fame, dispatching some awesome windy days. So far it's been a great series, with some fabulous racing. We are extremely focused - our aim is to perform well and win.”

In the second race of the day for the Farr 40 class, it was Giovanni Maspero's Joe Fly from Italy who dominated throughout the course, with a perfect start at the far pin end of the line. Gabriele Benussi, tactician on Joe Fly, feels that he had quite a difficult job today, with extremely challenging conditions: “It's been another tough day, with plenty of wind blowing at an average of 25 knots and lots of gusts that tested our tactical abilities. In the second race of the day, our helmsman, Giovanni Maspero, did a fantastic job and we were able to stay well ahead of the fleet throughout the race. We made a few small mistakes, like most of the crews. We are very happy as we were able to increase our distance in points from the fourth and fifth placed in the overall scorings and we are now a little more relaxed.” Mascalzone Latino, with another brilliant performance, finished second, followed by German entry Opus One, who is now second overall with a series of very consistent results.

Rolex week of the straits - Day 2: PLENTY OF WIND PROVIDES EXCITING RACING, MANY PROTESTS FILED

15/09/2005

Porto Cervo - SARDINIA - ITA

Another beautiful day of sailing in Sardinia for the 33 international crews competing in the 27th edition of the Rolex Settimana delle Bocche, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. By 9am - with most of the crews enjoying steaming “cappuccini” and freshly baked “brioche” (the Italian version of a croissants) in the Piazza Azzurra overlooking the boats - the famous Nortwesterly breeze locally known as Maestrale was already blowing at 15 knots. For the second day running, the Race Committee was able to complete three windward/leeward races for the Farr 40 and Swan 45 fleets, while the six IMS yachts sailed a 29-mile course - from Porto Cervo up the channel of La Maddalena, around the Barrettinelli rocks and the Monaci rocks, and all the way back, this time outside the channel, to a short sprint-like windward leg and the finish off Porto Cervo.
With six races sailed - and a maximum total of nine races in the series - Mascalzone Latino from Italy is leading in the Farr 40 fleet, Italian entry DSK Comifin heads the Swan 45 Class and Synergy from Russia leads the IMS fleet. However, at the time of writing, nine protests have been filed and still need to be discussed, therefore the overall scorings might are still in doubt.
In a steady breeze of 15-20 knots, today the One Design fleet provided plenty of action, with a few boats over the line early at the starts, a general recall and some jam-packed mark roundings, plenty of protest flags and penalty turns.
Among the Farr 40 fleet, pre-race favourite and current title-holder Nerone of Italians Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo Migliori - winners of this regatta for the past three years running - recovered well from yesterday's shaky start. With multiple World Champion and former Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, American Chris Larson, calling the tactics, Nerone was able to secure a second, a first and an eleventh in today's races. “Today we had a much better day than yesterday,” commented Massimo Mezzaroma, “especially in the first two races. In the third race, we miscalculated our entry at the first windward mark and had to execute a penalty turn, which cost us at least four or five places. However, we finished the day with a total of 14 points, which means an average of 4 points per race, and in such a highly competitive fleet this is an excellent result. Yesterday we were a bit rusty - we are non professional sailors and we just needed to get back in the game.”
America's Cup syndicate head Vincenzo Onorato sailed, too, three outstanding races with his Farr 40 Mascalzone Latino, earning two firsts and a sixth. With British accomplished sailor Adrian Stead calling the tactics, Mascalzone Latino won the first race of the day with an impressive lead over Nerone, while America's Cup veteran Tommaso Chieffi, tactician on Alessandro Barnaba's Fiamma, finished third. Lang Walker's Kokomo from Australia was caught early over the line, together with French entry Twins 2. In the second race of the day for the Farr 40 fleet, the first mark rounding provided plenty of action, with a number of boats forcing their way into the incoming fleet on starboard. Nerone dominated the whole way, Opus One took second place and Twins 2 finished third. Mascalzone Latino dominated again in the third race of the day, and Opus One earned another second, sailing again very consistently, ahead of Giovanni Maspero's Joe Fly from Italy.

 Rolex week of the straits

13/09/2005

Porto Cervo - SARDINIA - ITA

Just two days after the 37 Maxi yachts that competed in last week’s Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup left Porto Cervo, the 40-boat fleet of Farr 40, Swan 45 and IMS yachts has arrived for the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s Rolex Settimana delle Bocche (“Week Of The Straits”). Crews spent today completing registrations and inspections before racing begins tomorrow and continues through Sunday, September 17. The 2005 edition has attracted one of the largest fleets in the history of the event, and although the entry list is dominated by Italian boats, competitors from Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain and Russia will be looking to steal the limelight from their Mediterranean rivals. This year is also Rolex’s first as title sponsor of “Week of the Straits,” which has been organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda since 1972.

In the 18-boat Farr 40 class, the event title-holder, Italian Massimo Mezzaroma, has returned with his boat, Nerone. Mezzaroma has won the regatta for the past three years running and is a former class European and World Champion. One of Mezzaroma’s toughest competitors is expected to be Mascalzone Latino, helmed by America’s Cup syndicate head and YCCS member Vincenzo Onorato. Also competing is HRH Prince Frederik of Denmark sailing his Farr 40 Nanoq.

New Chairman for the Farr40 Med Fleet

06/09/2005

 Milano - ITA

Alberto Signorini concludes his assignment as Chairman of the Mediterranean Fleet.
As accepted in the owner's meeting held in Poltu Quatu, Sardinia, during the July event of the Deutsche Bank Sailing Trophy 2005, Alberto Signorini leaves his assignment as Chairman of the Farr 40 Med Fleet, having resigned after 4 years of activity in the role.
The owners, through the words of Wolfgang Schaefer, thanked Signorini for his performance and presented him with a much appreciated gift, a sophisticated laser binocular.
The owners then accepted the name of Carlo Alberini as successor to Signorini: he will formally be in charge starting from the next owner's meeting to be held in Porto Cervo on September 15th, during the "Rolex Week of the Straits" Regatta.

Poltu Quatu DEUTSCHE BANK SAILING TROPHY

02/07/2005

Poltu Quatu - Sardinia - ITA

Nerone is the winner of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy 2005. Twins first overall in Poltu Quatu Regatta.

TWT won the italian nationals.

With a forecasted north light wind, and a delay of one hour and thirty minutes on the scheduled time of 11,30 the Race Committe, headed by Sandro Ricetto, gave the warning signal for the last race of the event.

Three boats were called out of the line at the start and 2 came back to repeat correctly the crossing of the starting line. The third, Mascalzone Latino, because of an error of communication by radio of the sail number, continued the race crossing first the finishing line and reacting with amazement when at the arrival the acoustic signal was not heard,  realizing that they were OCS.

The winner of the day was Calvi, helmed by the owner Carlo Alberini.

Nerone did a conservative race in control of  TWT, managing the 5 points advantage on the Deutsche Bank Sailing Trophy overall standings: they finished  respectively 9 and 11. The French boat Twins, helmed by Erik Maris, finished 3 and won with 17 points advantage on the second boat TWT the Poltu Quatu Regatta. Third was Fiamma of Alessandro Barnaba.

The Memorial Award "Giorgio Vassena" for the best italian boat in the last event of the Deutsche Bank Sailing Trophy has been won by TWT of Marco Rodolfi, with Tiziano Nava calling tactics.

Nerone wins the 5th Farr 40 European Championship

19/06/2005

 St. Tropez - FRA

"Nerone” of Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo Migliori is the 2005 European Champion after finishing 4th in the last and only race of today. The Race Committee did the best possible to give the start for the 9th race but, after a general recall due to a  wind shift of 20 degrees to the right just 10 minutes before the time limit for last warning signal, made impossible the change of the course on time and, consequently, decided to abandoned the last race.

The winner of the race was the former European Champion “Joe Fly” and this performance let them finishing 2nd overall.

Second in today’s race and third overall was “TWT” of Marco Rodolfi.

At the prize giving Massimo Mezzaroma dedicated the European Champion title to Pasquale Landolfi, his  teacher and inspiration.

The fleet will now move to Poltu Quatu for the last event of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy 2005 scheduled on the first week-end of July.

 St. Tropez - FRA

The Gulf of St. Tropez did surprise us today by providing a nice 10 knots breeze from East, thereby allowing us to start the race at 15.00 hours.

The first race was dominated by the French boat "Twins 2" helmed by Erik Maris followed by the Italians of "Nerone". "TWT" was called back for being over the line early and was unable to recover the lost time finishing in 10th position.

In the second race the Race Committee moved the weather mark because of a wind shift of 20 degrees to the left: this affected the race course and brought the boats near to the shore: "TWT", who was trying to sail up the shore, unfortunatly run aground and retired from the race. "The italians of "Joe Fly" won the second race.

The third race gave "TWT" the possibility to make up for the previous misfortunes and she finished in stile by winning this last race of the day.

The winner of the day is the French "Twins 2" helmed by Erik Maris.

The leader of the overall classification after 7 races is "Nerone" of Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo, with Chris Larson calling tactics.

 DEUTSCHE BANK European championship

17/06/2005

 St. Tropez - FRA

The high pressure system over the south of France resulted in very light winds today: consequently the races had to be postponed until 16.00 hours when a light easterly breeze allowed the Race Committee to start the first and only race of the day.

After a general recall caused by a wind shift to south west, the second start was made after an adjustment  to the course.

The Greek boat “Atalanti XI”, steared by Stratis Andreadis made a surprising start on port tack close to the Race Committee boat and taking, consequently, the starboard side of the course.

This resulted in a leading position after the first tack over the Italian boat “Nerone”, with Antonio Sodo Migliori at the helm.

If “Atalanti XI” had stayed on the starboard side of the course, he would have been able to keep the lead which was now taken over by “Nerone”.

At the off-set mark “Nerone” was gybing with great part of the fleet following him: only “Atalanti XI” and the current leader of the Championship “Joe Fly” were keeping on starboard towards St. Maxime where again, like yesterday, there was less wind. The result was that they arrived as the last two boats at the leeward gate.

“Joe Fly” was not able to improve his position during the race, so he lost his leading overall position in the Championship.

“Nerone” kept the lead during the race and took over the overall number one position with 15 points.

“TWT” of Marco Rodolfi is in second place with 16 points while “Opus One” of Wolfgang Stolz is third with 18 points.

Tomorrow again, it will be a warm day with light winds, however the “Golfe de St. Tropez” often has a surprise up it’s sleeve.

 DEUTSCHE BANK European championship

16/06/2005

 St. Tropez - FRA

Warm and light wind for the first day of racing at the Deutsche Bank European Championship in St. Tropez.

Three races were done today in the Gulf of St. Tropez: with a light easterly wind, the Race Committee, headed by Georges Kohrel, began the starting procedure almost on the time scheduled and the fleet of thirteen boats crossed the starting line around one o’clock for the first race of the day. At the first mark the German boat “Opus One” had a large advantage on the fleet, followed by the French “Twins 2”.  On the next leg the German boat sailed more closed to the coast of St. Maxime and the less wind on that side of the course gave an advantage to the French boats that took the lead and won the race.

The second and the third race were dominated by the Italians of “TWT”.

But the winner of the day is the former European Champion “Joe Fly” with two third and one fifth.

A big mistake made by “Opus One” in the last race at the second windward mark costs Wolfgang Stolz  the leading of the Championship on the first day: a close tack within the two boats length from the mark was forcing “Madina” to luff  to avoid a collision. “Opus One”,  after the whistle of the International Jury, headed by Michael Clough, had no choice to clear the infringements with a two turn penalty, loosing the fourth place.

Weather forecast for tomorrow are again for light easterly wind with temperature in the middle of the day up to 33 degrees: three races are scheduled  with the first warning signal at 12.30.

DEUTSCHE BANK SAILING TROPHY - Ponza dà l'arrivederci ai Farr40...

30/05/2005

 Ponza - ITA

With the six races of Friday and Saturday the Regatta of Ponza, the second event of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy 2005, is closed. The arrival of the low pressure, that has brought the rain all over Italy but not to Ponza, it has however influenced the afternoon westerly breeze that, after a timid attempt,  has released completely. The Race Committee, presided by Sandro Ricetto,  did everything  possible to try to make  the last race with the best possible conditions, waiting up to the limit  for the starting signal  that was, for the last day, at 1,30 pm. With a breeze of 4-5 knots from 200 degrees the Race Committee began the starting procedure: after the start the wind was even less. The first Farr 40  turned the weather mark just a few minutes before the limit  time of 40 minutes, foreseen by the sailing instructions:  the regatta has continued therefore up to when the wind, at the end of the second leg,  has released definitely. To that point the Race Committee, decide to abandoned the race, sending the Farr 40 fleet home.

Therefore, the Roman team of "Nerone" owned by Massimo Mezzaroma and Anthony Sodo Migliori, won the Ponza Regatta. To the second place the German team of "Struntje Light" of Wolfgang Schaefer and third "Mascalzone Latino" of Vincenzo Onorato.

Positive balance of this first sail event on the island of Ponza, a very technical and difficult race course.

Four different race courses were selected before the event around the island but only one was used:  that between “La Guardia Cape” and the island of Palmarola. For the future will be interesting exploring other race courses where stronger breeze were noticed during this event.

DEUTSCHE BANK SAILING TROPHY - 1.st day in Ponza...

27/05/2005

 Ponza - ITA

DEUTSCHE BANK SAILING TROPHY - Ponza is ready for the show...

26/05/2005

 Ponza - ITA

In the splendid frame of the island of Ponza everything it is ready for the second event of the Farr 40 Mediterranean circuit.

There are 14  boats competing in the waters between the island of Ponza and the island of Palmarola, a race field  absolutely new for sailing competition that will be tested for the occasion by one of  the most diffused and competitive "One Design" of the world:  the Farr 40.

Crews  are coming from Italy, Germany, France, Greece, England and Australia.

Among the favourites there are TWT of Marco Rodolfi, winner of the first event in Capri last week, NERONE of Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo, winner of the last two editions of the prestigious Sailing Trophy of Deutsche Bank and World Champions  in 2003 and MASCALZONE LATINO  of Vincenzo Onorato, second in Capri and very determined in sight of the Americas Cup challenge.

The total races  are 7, in  three days of regatta beginning from Friday 27 May.

Great efforts of the various Institutions of the island of Ponza that  have made what needed for organizing such a prestigious event, starting from the Municipality of Ponza, to the Harbour Master and to the various local operators.

Meteorological conditions are favourable, with high pressure that should guarantee sea breeze typical of this part of the Mediterranean sea.

The registration of boats and crews will  continue to the morning of Friday and the event will officially open with the "briefing" for the owners and  the "skippers" at 10.00 am.

ROLEX CAPRI SAILING WEEK - TWT is the winner...

21/05/20045

 Capri - ITA

With three days of superb racing conditions and smooth operations by the organizers, the Race Committee (headed by Sandro Ricetto) and the International Jury (headed by Michel Clough), only one race was left for the final day of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week, the maximum number of races, according to the sailing instructions, being 9.

After a long postponement due to the lack of wind, the northwesterly breeze finally filled in, gradually increasing to 10 knots. The Race Committee was able to drop the answering pennant at 1.45 pm, just 15 minutes before the cut off time set by the sailing instructions.

Amongst the Farr 40s, Marco Rodolfi's TWT (27 points total) won the series with a large margin over Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino (47 points), the latter tied with Massimo Mezzaroma/Antonio Sodo Migliori's Nerone. Thanks to his two wins in the series, Mascalzone was able to take second place, Nerone having scored only one victory. Marco Rodolfi, owner of TWT, commented on his team's win: “After our third at the worlds in Sydney, we made some good progress. We trained a lot and we now have a good feeling for the boat and sail fast. Our tactician Tiziano Nava did a great job here in Capri and made no mistakes. In the series we had one race where we were leading the whole way, but I enjoy most those races when you are able to fight back from a bad position - you must never give up. This year the weather in Capri was a great surprise, with a strong northwesterly breeze on day one and three days with steady moderate winds. Our next big event will be the European championship in Saint Tropez, France.”

In today's Farr 40 race, Mascalzone Latino, with British America's Cup sailor Adrain Stead calling the tactics, was able to take an early lead with a good start and wise tactical choices, winning with a comfortable margin. Manfredo Toninelli's Mukka Express sailed very well ending up second, his best score since the start of the series. German entry Struntje Light, owned by Wolfgang Schaefer, finished third. Nerone and French entry Twins 2 had to fight hard for fourth place, with Nerone crossing the line only 3 seconds ahead of the French.

A few women were sailing in the Rolex Capri Sailing Week, among them Sofia Bekatorou (2004 and 2002 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year and gold medalist in the 470 class at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games), tactician on the Greek Farr 40 Atalanti XI, owned by George Andreadis. “It was really interesting after Miami to get to know the Mediterranean fleet, there were some very good sailors here in Capri and we had some highly competitive races” commented Sofia, adding “I also thoroughly enjoyed the weather and Capri. This was a very challenging event for us as we are a new team - all Greek - and we are looking forward to competing in other events in the future. We are trying hard to improve our level. On board Atalanti XI I sail as tactician, it's half the job that I normally have on the 470 where I helm. It's a very challenging role and I am still learning. The Farr 40 is a much bigger boat and there are many things that need to be adjusted when the conditions on the course change. Part of my job is also to motivate the crew and make sure that everyone knows how each role is important for the final outcome of the race. Finally, I wish to add that with the Atalanti team we look forward to trying to raise an all Greek challenge for the America's Cup in the future.”

Gianfranco Alberini, Commodore of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was very satisfied with the event. “The weather conditions were excellent and enabled us to run highly competitive races. The Farr 40 fleet, with 16 entries, provided plenty of action,” commented Commodore Alberini.

At the closing Rolex Prize Giving Ceremony, held in Marina Grande, the winners of each division were awarded with Rolex Trophies and a coveted steel and gold Rolex Submariner Date watch. Grand finale of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week is the Rolex Party at the Certosa of San Giacomo, one of the oldest examples of Caprese architecture. The open-air courtyard of the convent provides a fantastic candlelit setting for an evening spent enjoying the best of the local Caprese food and entertainment.

The Rolex Capri Sailing Week is organized by the Yacht Club Capri in conjunction with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, with the support of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and the Unione Vela Altura Italiana (UVAI).

ROLEX CAPRI SAILING WEEK - Perfect sailing day

20/05/20045

 Capri - ITA

In a picture perfect day - with Mount Vesuvius, the Peninsula Sorrentina and Ischia island as stunning backdrop - the Race Committee of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week was able to complete three windward/leeward races today.
After an initial postponement due to the lack of wind, the northwesterly breeze filled in, gradually increasing from 10 to 14 knots, and the crews had plenty of tactical decisions to make with the small but frequent wind shifts across the race course.

The Farr 40 class once again provided plenty of action with very close races and mixed results. Australian entry Kokomo of Sydney-based property developer Lang Walker was able to gain an early lead at the start of race one and keep ahead of his opponents throughout the race. In the last run, however, Kokomo had to fight back both Nerone (Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo Migliori, Italy) and TWT (Marco Rodolfi, Italy) who played well with the frequent wind shifts, gradually closing the gap and crossing the finish line just a few seconds apart.

French entry Twins 2 of Eric Maris, with America's Cup sailor Philip Presti calling the tactics, sailed a great second race. The first race wasn't as good as expected. We had a big left hand shift, we weren't on the right side and we had to struggle to keep alive. IN the second race we did a good job with the shifts, the guy did an excellent job in trimming the sails and we were able to stay ahead during the whole race and we were able to win with a big deal. We are very happy with this win, as I am new to this boat, this is my first race on the Farr 40 and with this team and we are learning. It takes a little time but I have a very good feeling. The crews are all very professional. Eric, my owner, wants to improve and is very focused.” German entry Struntje Light of Wolfgang Schaefer, with America's Cup helmsman Jesper Bank (United Internet Team Germany, challenger for the 32nd America's Cup) crossed the line second, ahead of Marco Rodolfi's TWT.

Race three, with a dying breeze, saw Struntje Light of Wolfgang Schaefer dominating the fleet, ahead of Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo Migliori's Nerone (Italy) and TWT. “It was a great day on the water and this a great area for sailing” commented Wolfgang Schaefer, adding “I enjoyed myself a lot, although the conditions today were quite difficult. We had a good start, nice tacks and Jesper did a good job, we also had a bit of luck - we had all we needed. I have been sailing the Farr 40 for a couple of years now and Jesper has been with us since last season. We will continue to sail together even though he is now with the German America's Cup team. I am German, therefore a great supporter of the team.”

With only one racing day still to go, TWT is leading the scoreboard with total 19 points, followed by Nerone with 43 points and Mascalzone Latino with 46.

Racing resumes tomorrow at noon for the final day of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week. The weather conditions should be similar to today's, with a moderate northwesterly thermal breeze.

The Rolex Capri Sailing Week is organized by the Yacht Club Capri in conjunction with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, with the support of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and the Unione Vela Altura Italiana (UVAI). For the Farr 40 class, the Rolex Capri Sailing Week is the opening act of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy 2005, while for the Swan 45 class, the Rolex Capri Sailing Week is the second leg of the Swan 45 Mediterranean Circuit 2005.

ROLEX CAPRI SAILING WEEK - Two races on the second day...

19/05/20045

 Capri - ITA

The thirty crews competing in the second day of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week had to deal with quite different weather conditions today. After yesterday's intense racing in 18 knots of wind, the Race Committee had to call on a postponement for today's starts due to the complete lack of wind in the first part of the day. The crews patiently waited on shore until the breeze filled in at around 1.30 pm, and left the dock well ahead of time for some last minute tune up in the light air and fluky air. The Race Committee, headed by Sandro Ricetto, was able to complete two windward/leeward races, both sailed in a shifting Northwesterly-Westerly breeze ranging from 10 to 14 knots and a big swell, very different from yesterday's short and irregular waves.

The Race Committee had to signal a general recall in the first start of the Farr 40s, and the following start still gave a few problems to many crews, with Nerone, Kokomo, Joe Fly and Mukka Express over the line early.
Marco Rodolfi's TWT (Italy) was able to stay ahead of the fleet right from the start and stretch its lead by picking the shifts well, taking line honors over Giorgio Goldoni's Sixty Group (Italy). French entrant Twins 2 owned by Eric Maris, with America's Cup sailor Philippe Presti calling the tactics, finished third.

In the second race of the day, it was Nerone (Italy), co-owned by Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo Migliori (at the helm), to take an early lead and stay well ahead of the pack throughout the entire race. “We are extremely satisfied with today's results. In the first race we were over the line early, but were able to get back into the race by choosing, wisely, the right hand side of the course. We managed to finish eighth, a good result considering our bad start. The second race was great, we had a good start, got ahead of the fleet and kept the lead throughout the race. The level of the Farr 40 class here is extremely high and you cannot allow yourself to make whatsoever mistake. Approximately half of our crew has changed since the past seasons and we need to gradually rebuild the team. We will get there.”

Second on the finish line was Australian entry Kokomo of Sydney-based property developer and keen sailor Lang Walker, who managed to keep Marco Rodolfi's TWT (Italy) at bay. “Capri is fantastic”, declared Walker as he stepped off his boat after today's races, adding that “the weather out there today was very tricky. In the first race we were over the line early and that made it very difficult for us to get back in the game. In the second race we had a good start and our tactician, Grant Simmer (General Manager of team Alinghi) did a very good job at picking the shifts. We came in second behind Nerone and ahead of TWT. In the first race we ended up having a big plastic bag wrapped around our keel - that didn't help us and it was certainly disappointing. We need to get out there tomorrow and have a good day.”

Racing resumes tomorrow at noon. According to Captain Filippo Petrucci, official meteorologist of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week, “the weather conditions should improve as a low pressure system gradually moves away from the island. For tomorrow's start we should have a moderate thermal westerly breeze ranging between 10 and 13 knots.”

The Rolex Capri Sailing Week, which runs through Saturday May 21, is organized by the Yacht Club Capri in conjunction with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, with the support of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and the Unione Vela Altura Italiana (UVAI).

ROLEX CAPRI SAILING WEEK - Fine conditions for the opening day

18/05/20045

 Capri - ITA

The opening day of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week was blessed with excellent sailing conditions, with a southwesterly breeze ranging from 14 to 20 knots, choppy seas and plenty of sunshine mixed with clouds.
The Race Committee, headed by Sandro Ricetto, was able to complete three windward/leeward races instead of the scheduled coastal race, with a last minute change of program due to the weather conditions.

The Farr 40 class, with sixteen entries, provided plenty of action with very close racing. Marco Rodolfi's Italian entry TWT, with Tiziano Nava calling the tactics, was able to score two victories, in race one and three respectively, with a fourth placing in race two.
Nava commented: “It was a great day, with fantastic racing conditions. We had two very good starts - and in such close racing that is when you gain the lead - and we were able to stay ahead of the fleet throughout the two races. In the second race of the day we didn't start so well, however we played well with the shifts and we were also quite lucky as the wind seemed to follow us around the course.”

In the second race of the day it was Mascalzone Latino, owned by Vincenzo Onorato - head of Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team, challenger for the 32nd America's Cup - to take line honors. Tactician Adrian Stead was very happy with his day: “We had a good day, our guys sailed very well and the conditions were fantastic. It's the first time we've sailed since the Farr 40 Worlds in Sydney last March and it was good to blow out the cobwebs. We also have a few new people on the boat. We kicked off with a fifth, then we had a good second race with a first. In the last race we had a good lead, but the wind died a little and we should have sailed a little better - we ended up second. There are 16 Farr 40s here in Capri, every regatta seems harder and harder, it's a great challenge to race in this class.”

Italian favorite Nerone owned by Massimo Mezzaroma, winner of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy 2004 and Farr 40 World Champion in 2003, with Lorenzo Bressani calling the tactics and Massimo Bortoletto & Marco Carpinello from Emirates TNZ, scored a second and a fourth but fell behind the leaders in the second race with a twelfth placing.

German entry Opus One, owned by Wolfgang Stolz, also faired well, with two thirds and a twelfth scoring. America's Cup sailor Kelvin Harrap, calling the tactics, commented: “I think Capri has a reputation for being very light and today was just perfect, 14 to 18 knots, we really enjoyed the racing. We had two thirds and a not so good one, I think it was a twelfth, but overall we had a very good day. In the Farr 40 class it's pretty easy to get a bad result and I think we've had ours today...”

Racing resumes tomorrow at noon. According to the weather forecast, a low pressure system should move over Capri during the night. A light northwesterly breeze should turn into a westerly breeze of 10-12 knots by midday.

The Rolex Capri Sailing Week, which runs through Saturday May 22, is organized by the Yacht Club Capri in conjunction with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, with the support of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and the Unione Vela Altura Italiana (UVAI).
For the Farr 40 class, the Rolex Capri Sailing Week is the opening act of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy 2005.

MED CIRCUIT 2004 - The debut of Rolex Capri Sailing Week

17/05/20045

 Capri - ITA

Capri is the magical setting for a brand new event with Rolex as title sponsor within the Mediterranean sailing circuit, the Rolex Capri Sailing Week.

The event sets off tomorrow, Wednesday May 18 and runs through Saturday May 21. The Rolex Capri Sailing Week - organized by the Yacht Club Capri in conjunction with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, with the support of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and the Unione Vela Altura Italiana (UVAI) - will feature highly competitive one design and handicap racing with both windward/leeward races and one coastal race, for a maximum total of nine races.

The fleet, moored in Capri's Marina Grande, includes the two successful one design classes Farr 40 and Swan 45. The rest of the event will be comprised of various yachts racing under the IMS rule with a limited range of rating (GPH 560-610). For the Farr 40 class, the Rolex Capri Sailing Week will also be the opening act of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy 2005, while for the Swan 45 class, the Rolex Capri Sailing Week is the second event of the Swan 45 Mediterranean Circuit 2005.

Thirty one yachts (9 IMS entries, 16 Farr 40s and 6 Swan 45s) have so far registered to compete in the Rolex Capri Sailing Week, with crews representing Australia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece and Italy.

Among the Farr 40 class, a boat to watch closely will be the Italian Farr 40 Nerone of Massimo Mezzaroma - with Lorenzo Bressani calling the tactics - winner of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy 2004 and Farr 40 World Champion in 2003. Another tough contestant will be Marco Rodolfi's TWT, who finished third at the 2005 Rolex Farr 40 Worlds. The Greek Farr 40 Atalanti XI, owned by George Andreadis, has Sofia Bekatorou - 2004 and 2002 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year and gold medalist in the 470 class at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games - among its crew members, besides several big wins to its name. Vincenzo Onorato, Chairman of the Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team, challenger for the 32nd America's Cup, will also be on the start line in Capri with his Farr 40 Mascalzone Latino.

Among the Swan 45 class, the competition will be fierce, with entries such as Italian Cuordileone owned by Leonardo Ferragamo, who swept up all three rounds of the Primo Cup last February, inaugural event of the 2005 Swan 45 Class Mediterranean Circuit. Paul Cayard - seven-time world champion and a five time America 's Cup veteran - will be calling the tactics aboard Cuordileone. Mintaka, the Italian Swan 45 who recently won the Italian National Championship Trophy in Portofino with a striking performance, besides having won the Swan 45 Gold Cup held in Capri last October, will be sailing in Capri under the name of Swing 3, having been chartered by Paolo Leonardi.

For the start of tomorrow's coastal race, scheduled at noon, Captain Filippo Petrucci - official meteorologist of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week - predicts moderate southwesterly winds ranging from 15 to 18 knots, shifting to a slightly lighter westerly later in the day. There will be a chance of light rain in the morning, due to a low pressure system moving tonight over the South of Italy, but conditions are set to improve during the day.

The Yacht Club Capri, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Rolex will officially welcome all the competitors tonight, May 17, with a “gastronomic tour” of Anacapri, the second largest town on the island - a little hidden and not as internationally renowned as Capri's bustling “Piazzetta”. Starting from tomorrow, at the end of each day spent at sea the competing crews will also be able to unwind and relax with plenty of après sailing refreshments at the Marina Grande.

The closing Rolex Prize Giving Ceremony will take place on Saturday May 21 - daily prizes for each class and Rolex Trophies for the winner of the series in each class will be awarded. The ceremony will be followed by the Rolex Party at the Certosa of San Giacomo, one of the oldest examples of Caprese architecture. The open-air courtyard of the convent will provide a fantastic candlelit setting for an evening spent enjoying the best of the local Caprese food and entertainment.

According to Gianfranco Alberini, Commodore of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, “The Rolex Capri Sailing Week is set to become a prominent feature of the Mediterranean sailing circuit. For many years, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Yacht Club Capri and Rolex hosted the IMS World Championship in the Gulf of Naples during the second half of May. This year, with the Rolex IMS World Championship being held in July in Menorca, Balearic Islands, we found an opening for an exciting event that could enable the owners and crews to test their skills at the beginning of the racing season. I am sure that many battles fought in the waters off Capri will become a permanent feature of the entire 2005 season.”
